Kids love to go swimming, there is something magical about the water, it has an allure that both excites and calms, it’s pleasant, and it’s healthy, too! Now that the weather is warm enough again, your kids will be clamouring for a trip to the lake, beach, or local pool so they can dive in for a day of fun and frolic in the wet and wild water! Of course, as with any outdoor activity that involves kids, there is some planning you need to do in advance to make sure everybody stays safe and comfortable during your aquatic adventure. The following are some tips to help you prepare for your kid’s big swim day!

Swim Clothes – First up are the swimsuits, if your kids have doubled in size over the cold months as they tend to do, then you are going to need to go shopping! Make sure to choose swimsuits that are a comfortable fit and never too tight, which can cause painful rashes when wet. We recommend bright colours and patterns that will make your kids easy to spot from the poolside, which adds to their safety and your peace of mind. Even on the hottest days, being in the water for hours on end can have a chilling effect on their little bodies, if they can step out of the pool into a cosy childrens towelling robe it will save them a lot of shivering! Not only that, but the robes look and feel great for poolside lounging, too!
Swim Gear & Toys – The rules of what you can enter the water with will vary from the beach to the pool, but goggles are always welcome and will protect your kid’s eyes from both irritating saltwater and chlorine. Floatation toys are fun, but they are just toys and can never be used as safety devices!
Sunscreen – This is an absolute must! You need to apply a good coat of high SPF sunscreen to every inch of their skin that shows, and about an inch under the suit’s edges to account for bunching and slipping. Never, ever buy a brand that says it’s ‘sun resistant’, it may be for the first five minutes on the pool deck until either you sweat it off or dive into the water, which will wash it away in no time! It’s essential that your sunscreen be ‘waterproof’ so it stays on your kid’s skin while they swim and protects them from the sun’s harmful rays! Be sure to reapply frequently, sunburns suck!
